The
East Lombok With a much drier climate, smaller population and far fewer facilities than the west of the island, the east tends to be left off most itineraries, although if you're heading to or from Sumbawa, you'll pass through the small eastern port of Labuhan Lombok While there's little to detain you for long, Labuhan Haji, south of Labuhan Lombok, is an attractive seaside town, with lush scenery inland. To the north of Labuhan Lombok, the land is dramatically arid, giving striking views inland to the mountains, and the accommodation at Labuhan Pandan gives you the chance to organize a trip to the uninhabited islands just off the coast. Labuhan Lombok & Arround Travelling
by ferry between Lombok and Sumbawa, you'll pass through LABUHAN LOMBOK
74 km east of Mataram, probably the least interesting town in Lombok,
although the almost circular bay enclosed by a small curvmig promontory
is very attractive. The ferry terminal, Labuhan Kayangan, is at the,
far end of the promontory, a three-kilometre shadeless walk along the
new road around the south side of the bay; take a local bemo if you
can (Rp500). Kayangan Hill, on the south side of the bay has good views
both inland over Lombok and across the Alas Strait to Sumbawa; the path
up the hill leaves from the road to the ferry terminal, and its a short,
dusty climb. South of Labuhan Lombok SELONG,
20km southwest of Labuhan Lombok and the capital of Lombok Timur (East
Lombok), is a large and thriving market town, although the travel hub
for the area is a couple of kilometres west, at Pancor. Selong has broad,
busy streets and was the site of the first school to be established
in the cast of Lombok, in 1902. There is accommodation at Erina, Jalan
Pahlawan 164 on the north side of the main road, but little reason for
tourists to linger. North of Labuhan Lombok Travelling north from Labuhan Lombok, you're soon out into the countryside, though the scenery quickly becomes parched and villages are few and far between. The towering mahogany trees Am from Labuhan Lombok are welcome shade and are widely believed to be the largest such specimens in Lombok. Seven kilometres north of Labuhan Lombok, the great little Aik Manis (no phone) is owned by an Indonesian/New Zealand couple. They have a set of wood, bamboo and thatch bungalows in a neat garden just behind an excellent beach. In addition, there's a small restaurant attached, great views to the offshore islands and Sumbawa and they are building a boat so they can offer camping trips to Gili Bidara, snorkelling to Gili Sulat and Gili Lawang and fishing excursions.
The closest islands are Gili Petagan and its satellites, with larger Gili Sulat and Gili Lawang further north. The islands are uninhabited and the government has banned building on them, although Perama uses Gili Kondo (also known as Gili Perama) for an overnight stop on its tours. Some are just mangrove swamps without any beach, but Gili Bidara and Gili Petagan have good beaches and snorkelling. You can arrange boat trips, snorkeffing and fishing expeditions to the islands from Siola Cottages. It costs Rp 1.25,000 for a trip to Gili Petagan for a boat that takes a maximum of five people and Rp.150,000 for the same boat to Gili Sulat and/or Gili Lawang. An overnight camping trip for two people to Gili Bidara will set you back Rp250,000. Snorkelling equipment is available to rent for Rp10,000 per day. The Japanese are involved in a mangrove study on Gili Lawang, Gili Petagan and Gili Sulat, and have built a walkway in the swamp that can be used for jungle walks without disturbing the area. Operators from Bali bring occasional dive groups here, but there's no local operator. Just north of Labuhan Pandan, the small village of SAMBELU is a traditional Bugis settlement with houses built on stilts -although they are gradually being replaced by concrete and brick dwellings with tile or corrugated iron roofs. 'Me views of Gili Sulat and Gili Lawang from here around to BELANTING are very enticing as they appear very close and it's easy to see their shimmering beaches across the Sanglian Strait. Moving on around the coast towards Obel Obel, the countryside gets even drier, traffic is rare and the road begins to twist and turn through the hills which slope right down to the coast. From Padamekan, the road sticks closely to the black?sand coast. OBEL OBEL about 45km from Labuhan Lombok, is a tiny oasis of green fields in among the folds of the barren hills. there are very few tourists here, but you'll find somewhere to buy a drink. Ten kilometres further on is the village of Kali Putih where the road branches south to Sembalun Lawang, while the coast road continues to Bayan
