The Gili Islands - Gili Meno

A similar oval shape to Gili Trawangan, GILI MENO is much smaller, about 2km long and just over 1km wide. This is definitely the most tranquil island of the three, with a local population of just 350 and no nightlife, although some solo women travellers have found a few of the young men that hang around particularly persistent. The snorkelling is good all along the east coast. It takes a couple of hours to stroll around the island which has a salt lake in the centre resembling a muddy pond, surrounded by a few sets of saltmaking paraphernalia there is no postal agent or Perama office, but Mallia's Child offers shuttle buses to destinations on Lombok and Bali. You can change money at Mallia's Child, Gazebo and Casablanca, and there's a wartel near the harbour. Albatross Dive Shop offers the same range of courses and dives for experienced divers as the operation on Gili Trawangan and are based at Casablanca.

Accommodation
The range of accommodation options is pretty wide, with several mid-range choices - most is spread along the east coast over a fairly small area. Most bungalows have their own generator for electricity, except one or two at the northern end, which is where you'll get the best budget value. Biru Meno is a new resort under construction on the west coast of the island - it should have fine views, but it remains to be seen exactly what will be on offer.

• Blue Coral (Karang Biru). Quiet accommodation in traditional bungalows, at the peaceful north end of the island.
• Bougenvil Resort. This mid-range place has large, airy rooms with air-con and hot water and a fair-sized pool. It's usually lively and bustling, but can be a bit desolate when empty.
• Casablanca. One of the better mid-range places, set about 100in back from the beach with a pretty garden. It has a range of options from standard thatched places to extremely comfortable rooms with air con and hot water overlooking the rather diminutive pool.
• Gazebo. Ten attractive and comfortable bungalows set in a coconut grove, and with air-con but no hot water. It's often booked up.
• Kontiki. Close to a good beach with several accommodation
  options (the cheaper rooms have no fan), and a beachside restaurant
• Mallia's Child. Bamboo and thatch bungalows with attached bathroom in a good location near a fine beach.
• Pondok Meno. Large bungalows widely spaced in a shady garden, set slightly
  back from the beach towards the north of the island.
• Pondok Santai. Traditional wooden bungalows with red-tiled roofs set in an, attractive garden at the northern end of the island. No electricity.
• Royal Resort. Very close to the harbour, these bungalows have fan and coldwater bathrooms and are set in a large garden but are rather pricey.
• Zoraya. To the north of the east coast, with some attractively furnished bungalows with air-con, though the beach nearby is nothing special.
