The small villages of BATU KOQ and SENARU to the south of Bayan (about 86km from Mataram), are easily reached by bemo (Rp1500) from Anyer, a few kilometres to the north - if you take an ojek, Rp5OOO-6OOO is a fair price. Both have accommodation spread out for several kilometres along the road: Segara Anak is the most northerly and furthest from the mountain, while Bale Bayan Senaru lies right at the end of the road where the path up the mountain begins. Don't expect telephones, postal services, hot water or luxury in any of these places, but they all have attached cold-water bathrooms and, while the most basic are bamboo and thatch, the newer ones are concrete and tile with good, simple furnishings. Breakfast is usually included in the price but you should check. Places on the east of the road generally have the best views towards the mountain. Most will help you arrange your trek rent out gear, find porters and store your stuff while you climb, and many have small restaurants attached, serving simple Indonesian and Sasak meals, although food and drink prices tend to be higher than in more accessible areas.

side in several places, finally combining into a main fall about 25m high which plunges into the river. You can bathe, although the water is pretty chilly. Follow the irrigation channel along from here and you'll reach the road at Batu Koq; it's a pleasant walk with good views over the local fields to the north coast Alternatively, there's an even higher and more impressive waterfall beyond the first one; ask for directions at your accommodation.
It's worth visiting the traditional village at Senaru, a fenced compound with houses of bamboo and thatch set out in rows, next to the Bale Bayan Senaru.'Me villagers still five a very simple life and farm the land using methods that haven't changed for centuries. Someone will appear to show you around and you'll be expected to make a donation and sign the visitors' book, which explains the use that earlier donations have been put to, such as building concrete water tanks and paying for regular doctors' visits to the village.

Bale Bayan Senaru, the place closest to the mountain: basic bungalows in a small garden.
Bukit Senaru, Bungalows are well spaced in a charming garden with good verandahs.
Gunung Baru, Small set-up, not far from the start of the trail, with a few basic bungalows.
Pondok Achita Bayan. Good bungalows and verandahs back and front for mountain and garden views.
Pondok Guru Bakti. Basic bungalows with excellent views of the waterfall from the rooms at the back.
Pondok Indah. Good bungalows and fine north-coast views; more expensive rooms are bigger, with Western toilets.
Pondok Senaru. The biggest set-up with a huge restaurant; offering the bestquality accommodation in the area, all with great verandahs, set in a pretty garden with plenty of bale from which to admire the view.
Puri Jaya Wijaya. Small place with verandahs overlooking the garden rather than the great views behind.
Rinjani. Unfortunately this place doesn't take advantage of the views, but the
bungalows are adequate.
Segara Anak. The first place on the road from Bayan. There are stunning panaromas from the verandahs of the more expensive bungalows, while cheaper ones overlook the garden. 'Meir restauranL with equally fine views, is 100m up the road.
