The North Lombok
The Coast - Climbing Gunung (Mount) Rinjani

The summit of Rinjani, the highest point of the region's volcanic mountainous mass, is reached by relatively few trekkers; the majority are satisfied with a shorter, less arduous trip to the crater rim. From the rim you can see the beautiful turquoise lake, Segara Anak (Child of the Sea) inside the massive crater, with the small perfect cone of Gunung Baru (New Mountain) rising on the far side. The lake is considered to be the abode of the gods and becomes a place of worship for the Wetu Telu people on the nights of the full moon, while Balinese people come here during their Pekelem festival, during the full moon of the fifth Balinese month, to make offerings, often of gold, to the lake.
Having lain dormant since 1906, Gunung Baru erupted again in August 1994 closing the mountain for several weeks and raising fears of a major di Gunung Rinjani itself has been inactive since 1901, although it puffed a bit of smoke in 1944 and 1951. Fortunately all has gone quiet again but it should be treated with respect and is notoriously unpredictable.

The routes
The simplest trek is from Senaru, climbing to the crater rim. There is a forest office at the start of the track where you pay Rp.2000 for your permit and register. The route takes you from the village at 860m (marked on some maps as Position) up through the forest to further rest positions (also called plawangan) with small bale. Beware the extremely precocious monkeys at the bale who will rifle through your stuff and take what they want. Rest Position 11 is at 1570m and Position III at 2300m; you then leave the forest for the steep slog up to the rim at 2634m. It takes most people six to seven hours or more of walking, not allowing for rests, to get to the rim from Senaru and usually involves a night on the mountain unless you are extremely fit and fast. Sadly the bale are in a very poor state of repair and not ideal for sleeping in. A tent is preferable, and vital if you plan to sleep on the actual rim.

A further possibility after climbing to the rim is to descend down into the crater to the lake itself, at around 2000m. The path into the crater is very steep and rather frightening at the top, but gets better further down (1hr 30min). You can bathe in the warm water of the lake or the hot springs along its shores; the bestknown issue is from the Goa Susu (Cave of Milk), named for the white colour of the water. Most people get down to the lake in one day from Senaru, spend the night by the shore and return the same way the following day.

From the lake it's possible to climb out on a different path to a site called Plawangan II at 2900m, and from there up to the summit of Rinjani, a seven-hour trek, for which you'll need a guide. Try to get to the surnmit for sunrise or by about 7am, as it clouds over and gets very windy by 9am.

A shorter route to Plawangan H is to climb from Sembalun IAwang on the east side of the mountain (6-9hr), making it possible to ascend the mountain by one route and descend by another. However, relatively few people do this because of complications with porters, transport and the return of equipment they have rented. In Sembalun Lawang, the path starts under a large archway, beside a three-metre-high concrete clove of garlic which is pretty hard to miss.

Practicalities
Tere is spring water at Positions II and III from the Senaru side during and just after the rainy season, and also around the lakeshore, but check locally before you set out. Ifs vital to carry adequate water and food for the climb.

If you are simply climbing up from Senaru to the rim or down to the lake you don't need a guide, although a porter is a great advantage. The path leaves to the left just beyond Bale Bayan Senaru in Senaru and is difficult to lose. From Sembalun Lawang the route is straightforward up to Plawangan II, but check conditions with the owner of the Cemara Siu guesthouse in the village. To climb to the summit of Rinjani, youll need someone to show you the way, usually a porter who will carry your gear, cook your food and pitch your tent as well. Prices for porters, from either starting point, are Rp30,000-50,000 a day and you must take food and water for them too. If you want to engage a guide in addition (hell be unlikely to carry anything), you'll pay Rp5O,OOO-70,000.

Most of the accommodation places near the mountain rent out gear. Sleeping bags cost RplO,000-25,000, mattresses about Rpl.0,000, tents Rp25,000-40,000 Few tourists make it this far and there's nowhere to stay.
