East of Kuta

The simply glorious beaches of Seger and Tanjung Aan are easily accessible from Kuta and, at a push, walkable if you have no transport; bicycles are a good idea. Seger is closest to Kuta (1km) and is now the location of the new luxury Novotel development, which certainly isn't inconspicuous, but neither is it as aesthetically horrible as it could have been. To reach Tanjung Aan (5km), follow the road east out of the resort and take the first sealed turning to the right. There are actually two perfect white-sand beaches here, Aan to the west and Pedau to the east, separated by a rocky outcrop, Batu Kotak. As their popularity has grown, a few hawkers now visit the beaches selling their wares and there are some drinks stalls too, but no other facilities.

Continuing on the road east, past Aan, the small fishing village of GERUPAK just under 8km from Kuta, perches on the western shores of Gumbang Bay. Lobster is one of the local specialities and buyers come here from all the big hotels on Lombok and sometimes from Bali.1bere are fine views across the bay to BUMBANG on the eastern shore, and you can rent a canoe or a boat with a motor to take you across. From Bumbang there's a track north to the Awang road, but you can't rely on picking up transport to take you back to Kuta.

The thriving fishing village of AWANG, 16km east of Kuta, is well worth the trip for the views of Awang Bay, a massive inlet, l0km long and 8km wide in parts. As the road descends into the village, you'll be able to spot the island of Linus, just off Batu Nampar at the northern end of the bay, the tiny settlement of Ekas across on the southeast peninsula, and see all the way south to the open sea. You can charter boats from Awang across to Ekas, a much easier option than tackling the rough roads. Wooden bugis-style houses on stilts line the shore and the bay is full of boats of all shapes and sizes, from large ocean-going fishing boats down to tiny dugout canoes. The beach here spreads magnificently both north and south from the village, and on the way down into Awang the view is stunning.
