The Gili Islands - Gili Air

Closest to the mainland, with the largest local population of the three island (1000), GlLI AIR stretches about 1.5km in each direction. In terms of atmosphere, Gili Air sits somewhere between lively, social Gili Trawangan and peaceful Gili Meno. It takes a couple of hours to complete a circuit on foot, and there great views across to Sira beach on the mainland. There's a good range of modation available, from beach huts to luxurious bungalows. The conglomeration of restaurants and losmen behind the waste ground on the southeast corner is where you'll find most of the action, and the beach here is the most popular, with good snorkelling

Reefseekers diving operation is a highly regarded local company. They offer trips for experienced divers, a range of PADI courses up to a Divemaster Internship and also give information for snorkellers. Reefseekers are particularly involved in conservation in the area and have established a small turtle hatchery for eggs they rescue from local markets - this is pretty much the only sight on Gili Air so is definitely worth a visit They hatch the eggs, rear the turtles and then return them to the sea; they calculate they have a ninety percent survival rate and so far have released over 500 back into the wild. The turtles include green, hawksbill and Oliver Ridley, some of the most endangered species in the world, and it's a great place just to go and have a look, learn a bit and perhaps get lucky in seeing some turtles hatched or some released. There's no admission charge - the proprietors are just happy if people are interested. Dream Divers and Blue Marlin, both well established on Gili Trawangan, also have dive shops here.

Plenty of moneychangers can be found around the island, and the wartel (7.30 am-11 lpm) is at Gili Indah. The full range of tourist shuttle tickets can be booked from Perama(7.30am-7pm), which is just behind Gili Indah. There's no postal agent on Gili Air, but postcards and stamps are available from the shops and mail gets taken to the mainland regularly by Perama. Internet access is at Coconut Cottages (7am-noon & 4-10pm; Rp1000 per minute for the first ten minutes and then Rp500 per minute after that), and at Gili Indah (Rp5O,OOO per hour or Rp800 per minute).
